Banking Hours W/C 25/5/09

May 25th, 2009 by Alhaurino

I called at the BBVA bank this lunchtime and found it closed. Monday to Wednesday this week (25th to 27th May 09) it closes at 12.00 noon.
Further research (a walk up Gerald Brenan) shows all banks are taking the same view, except most are open until 12.30 pm.
So remember to do your banking early this Feria week! Even the locals seemed uninformed. Thursday and Friday, of course, everything is shut.

Liverpool Football Club – Update

May 11th, 2009 by Joe the Blogger

It has finally happened.

Diego of Bar Sardina has appeared (only in the privacy of his home, as far as we know) wearing, or should that be ‘modelling’, the Liverpool shirt. At least we got the pictures!

These are attached below and comments (careful!) invited.

Día de la Cruz – Friday Afternoon

May 1st, 2009 by Alhaurino

Well it was a late start today. The main convoy with the police motorcycle escort did not get to the Cruz de la Misión roundabout until 3.30pm. In past years it was all over by then!

The late arrival back in town did not diminish the amount of noise produced by the event. Although there were not as many BOOM BOOM rockets as earlier years, the size and volume of some of the air horn installations more than made up for them.

I think my favourite vehicle was the open back lorry with several rows of air horns above the cab and on the back of the truck a little bar, with a full size beer pump dipensing San Miguel. The passengers in the back (and no doubt the driver) were enthusiastically taking advantage of this facility.

Día de la Cruz

April 26th, 2009 by Alhaurino

Day of the Cross. This is organised by the Cofradía of the Santa Vera Cruz church – the “Greens” – and has events for approx 2 weeks. You can view the complete programme here.
Friday the 1st May is the noisiest and one of the most visible events of the period.
It starts officially at 8.00am (but in reality probably earlier) with a convoy of cars and trucks heading round the southern bypass, blowing their horns and letting off rockets (the type that rise vertically a few hundred feet then go BOOM).
The convoy heads out into the countryside to collect rosemary and they get back to town sometime around or after mid-day – this is not precise – but you will hear them coming back well in advance of seeing them!
Returning along the southern bypass and down Avenida de la Libertad they arrive at the Cruz de la Misión (Stone Cross) roundabout, where they turn left up Gerald Brenan horns blowing – a lot of vehicles have extra horns fitted – and do a circuit through the old town, scattering rosemary as they go. They do a full circuit back to Cruz de la Misión, then maybe some do a detour up Gerald Brenan towards Málaga, or down Cartama road. While all this is going on, there will be some chaps near the Cruz de la Misión letting off rocket after rocket – BOOM, BOOM, BOOM.
By mid afternoon the rockets and rosemary will have run out and normality returns. A lot of the participants and audience will have retired to a bar. Bar Sanchez on the corner of Calles Fuengirola and Torremolinos is as good a place to find them as any, it will be full of people, all dressed in green!
Enjoy the day.

For more information on Saturday 2nd May and Sunday 3rd events, see the programme via the link above, or post a question on Forum Alhaurin and I can fill you in with the highlights.

Liverpool Football Club

Diego, of Bar Sardina, who is an avid Real Madrid fan, has been given a Liverpool shirt with his name on the back, by a couple of his customers from the UK (guess which city they live in). The look on his face was priceless!

Actually he seemed thrilled, but he has yet to be seen wearing it.
